Preparing for Your Mini Portrait Session

We know that planning for your portrait session can seem a bit overwhelming! We hope that this mini photo session guide will help you feel more at ease, and even more excited, for your upcoming portrait photo session with Northeast Florida Photography Team, Citrus and Salt Photo Collective.

What’s the difference between a mini session collection, and a full portrait experience?

The Citrus and Salt Photo Collective full portrait experience includes more planning, from outfits to locations, along with a larger mix of posed and candid photos. The full portrait experience is designed to capture a story – your story. These full photo sessions are also ideal for younger children who need more freedom to run around, and take a little longer to warm up to people.

The Citrus and Salt mini portrait sessions, however, are geared to be quick and easy. We’ll jump directly into posed portraits, capturing those perfect smiling at the camera poses, along with just a few interaction photos. We do not recommend mini sessions for children who take longer to warm up to people, as sessions are scheduled back to back, and you don’t want to lose any session time, thus resulting in less photos in your gallery.

Please plan on arriving at least 10 minutes early to give yourself plenty of time for last minute issues that may arise (traffic, parking, etc).  Mini portrait sessions are scheduled back to back, and any amount of time that you are late will directly impact the length of your session and number of images you may receive.

What to Wear

When picking out your outfits, pick out the outfit for the most difficult to dress person first (almost always us, as mommas!) and then plan everyone else’s outfits around that one.

Try to plan colors and patterns as if you were dressing one whole person.  Too many patterns are really busy for the eye when looking at a group, so we recommend one person with a pattern, and everyone else pull colors from the pattern.

Reds, magentas, and oranges often leave an unflattering color cast on skin. We also recommend avoiding neon colors and clothing with graphics, as they tend to take away from your beautiful faces!

If there’s an area of your body you’re uncomfortable with, you’ll want to dress to flatter your features. For example, if you are self-conscious about your arms, plan on wearing an outfit with sleeves, or a coverup. You want to love how you look in your photos!

Prepping the Crew

Usually the guys and the littles aren’t too excited about having their photos taken. Spend a few minutes before your session letting them know how special these portraits are to you. We can assure you that once they realize how important it is, they will light up the camera for you.

If you have littles, plan on packing a snack and water for them. Many families decide in advance on a fun treat for the kids to enjoy after the session if they listen well, such as an ice cream cone.  Additionally, it helps if their bellies are full and they’ve had plenty of rest beforehand.
